The religion of Islam teaches that a person finds peace in this life by obeying Allah. They commit themselves to God and pray for peace. They believe in one God. Islam teaches that people should love God with all their hearts and Jesus is seen as a Prophet among them. They teach about the final judgment. In the judgment, some will go to heaven and some will go to hell.

The founder of the Islamic religion is Muhammad, he was their prophet – and he said that the angel Gabriel came to him and gave him a message from God. He was born in the city of Makkah and died in AD 632.

Sukkot is a celebration that is done in the autumn,(October-November). The Jews who left Egypt with Moses lived in tents in the desert. The tents did not provide much protection – they had to rely on God for protection.

Now that they were living in stone houses they did not want to forget how to still fully rely on God’s help. So, once a year they build huts to live in which they call sukkah, and decorate them with fruits to thank God for the autumn fruits.

How do they celebrate this festival?
They have parties, sukkah crawl (crawling from hut to hut), drink wine and eat fruits. The family eats their breakfast there and have fun. But they do not sleep in it.

DEATH & JEWISH FESTIVAL DAYS

In Jewish custom, dead bodies are washed and wrapped in white linen. The body is placed in a plain wooden box and buried. During the burial, prayers are said and the close family or nearest relatives take turns shoveling earth into the grave.

In the setting of the Reform Jews, the body can be cremated . Among the Orthodox Jewish families, close relatives make a small Rip in their clothes to show their sadness. When the Jews have a death, they mourn for seven days. The home of the dead is visited by those who come to express sympathy.
The bereaved may sit on low stools and wear slippers. All mirrors in the home are covered. Friends of the family bring food for them. The women do not wear makeup and the men do not shave.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEAD
Every year on the anniversary of the death of a parent, the children light a candle that burns 24 hours. They say special thanks and praise God and ask him for peace

(They think that Elijah is coming back to announce the Messiah. Each person is given a book called

Haggadah. In this book is contained the Passover story. The story is read during the meal. A special plate is placed on the table with symbolic foods. The food is used to tell the story of the Exodus. The celebration is a mixture of sadness and joy. The Jews remember how they were once slaves. But they are also happy for their freedom.

What is on the symbolic plate?
A roasted lamb shank – representing the Passover lamb.

This service is held on the Sabbath closest to the boy’s thirteenth birthday. Both girl and boy are taught by the Rabbi weeks ahead, learning the Hebrew Language of the Law.

In the orthodox synagogue the Jewish boy is invited to read the scripture that was set for that day. The Rabbi preaches a sermon. In his sermon, he gives special instructions to the boy concerning his duties to the Jewish Law. Prayers are offered and a benediction is pronounced upon the Jewish boy. When a boy has taken Bar Mitzvah, he is allowed to wear the prayer shawl and prayer- boxes and say the Hebrew prayers over bread and wine.

JUDAISM

WHAT IS JUDAISM?
Judaism is the religion of the Jews.

HOW CAN WE TRACE THE JEWISH NATION BACK TO ABRAHAM?
In Genesis 12;1-2, God told Abraham to leave his country and his people and his family to journey to a land that He(God) was going to show him. God promise Abraham that He would make of him a great nation……..

HOW WAS THE JEWISH NATION BEGAN?

Abraham and Sarah

Isaac(the son of promise) & Rebecca
. .
. .
Esau Jacob
.
.
.
12 sons

The nation of Israel was born out of the twelve (12) sons of Jacob.

WHERE DID THE NAME ‘ISRAEL’ COME FROM?
Gen. 32:24-28 we read that Jacob wrestled with an angel. He refused to let the angel go until the angel blessed him. The angel asked him what his name was, he replied “Jacob” the angel told him that he would no longer be called Jacob but Israel because he had struggle with God and men and had overcome. Therefore, his changed name became the name of the Jewish nation called the Israelites.

JEWISH BELIEFS AND PRACTICES
The Jews keep the Commandments given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. Their statement of belief is called the Shema which is written in the Torah (the five books of Moses). The Shema reads: “Hear O Israel the Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your might” (Deut. 6:4, 5).
Sabbath

The Jews follow the fourth commandment- which says to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. (ex.20:4). The day begins at sun set on Friday and ends at sun set on Saturday. As the Sabbath begins, the wife blesses the children and lights candles. The husband on return from the synagogue gathers his family around the table and blesses them. The ceremony is called Kiddush.

Jewish Diet

The Jewish diet and preparation of meat is based on the Leviticus law handed down from God to Moses. In Lev. 11 God made a listing of the things He made to eat that are clean and fit for eating; and those that are not clean and unfit for eating. The Leviticus law also states how the blood should be drain from the animals before eating. Because Jews follow the Leviticus law of food preparation, their food is referred to as Kosher (food prepared in a healthy way and fit for eating).

Birth
A special ceremony is held for a Jewish boy and girl eight days after birth. Baby boys are circumcised in accordance with the covenant made with Abraham and God and special prayers are said for the health of the boy and his parents. His saints in heaven between the first and second resurrections
28. New Earth - On the new earth, in which righteousness dwells, God will provide an eternal

home for the redeemed and a perfect environment for everlasting life, love, joy, and learning

in His presence.

Another mark of the Seventh Day Adventist is its health message. They believe that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, unclean foods (like pork, conch, shrimp etc.) should be avoided as outlined in scripture. The diet should be as healthful as possible, with enough rest and exercise. Alcoholic beverages, tobacco and irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics should not be practiced.

SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST RELIGION

HISTORY
The seed for Adventism began to be sown on 27th November 1893, when C.H. Richards and his wife, through the colporteur ministry arrived in Nassau from New York, and spread the Advent Message through the printed page. Individuals receiving the books began to read and study the printed pages –thus accepting the advent message.

Following the Richards in 1895 was Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Parmele who were also literature evangelists. Their work was made a little bit easy because of the printed pages given out by the Richards. One week after the arrival of the Parmeles’, Mr. Charles Antonio, a shoemaker and his family of six became the first Bahamian to accept the Seventh Day Adventist message. His son, William W. Antonio was among the first to serve on the Bahamas Mission of Seventh Day Adventist Executive Committee.

The spark of Adventism began to grow, two then young men, Pastors Silas N. McKinney and Neville E. Scavella were the first Bahamians to train for the ministry. In 1956, upon completion of their theological studies, they were employed by the Bahamas Mission which became a Conference in 1968. There have been many other persons who had a hand in the furthering of Adventism in the Bahamas, such as Pastor Swaney, Pastor and Mrs. Smith and many others.

Since the start of the Seventh Day Adventist Conference, many Bahamians have served as Presidents. They are as follows:

Bahamian Presidents:
Silas N. McKinney 1964 -1976
Leslie V. McMillan 1976 - 1980
Hugh A. Roach 1980 - 1986
Silas N. McKinney 1986 - 1990
Jeremiah Duncombe 1990 - 1996
Keith D. Albury 1996 - January 10, 2003
Leonard Johnson - January 10, 2003 – to present

ORGANIZATION OF THE CHURCH
To date, the Seventh Day Adventist Church is made up of 50,000 congregations in 210 countries and over 12 million members and growing. To maintain order, unity and to run efficiently, the church is organized into four structural levels.

1. The General Conference/Divisions provide leadership on a global scale(world wide) and focus on specific needs within the various world fields.

2. The Unions: Those serving at this level are to implement the vision and goals in their regions, adopting strategies in a way to fit their territory.

3. Conferences: Those serving at this level manage the day to day affairs of a group of churches and institutions, while coordinating and planning how to carry God’s words forward in the area assigned to them.

4. Local Churches: At this level, the local church is expected to nurture its members, evangelize their communities, build individual faith and provide the grass root structure for the entire church organization.

The Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists is the fourth largest religious denomination of the Bahamas; with a history of over 100 years (1893). Even though Prince Williams was credited with being the founder of the First Baptist Church, he was not allowed to be the pastor because he had a bad marriage. Pastor Scriven became the first pastor of Bethel Baptist Church. Prince Williams then established the St. John’s Native Baptist Church, originally called William’s chapel and Bethlehem Chapel.

Joseph Burton built Zion Chapel on August 25th 1835 to attract a white congregation. Zion grew, but not with whites. The Baptist is known for their splitting habits which are called MULTIPLICATON BY DIVISION. This meant that when conflict existed among the leadership of the church, they leave and formed their own church.

By 1869, there were three distinct groups of Baptists in the Bahamas, Bethel, St. John’s and Zion Baptist.

In an effort to unify (make as one) the Baptist family of all Islands of the Bahamas, The Bahamas Baptist Missionary and Education Convention was formed in 1935 with Reverend A. C. Symonette as President. The first annual session was held May 25, 1936 at St. John’s Baptist church.

CONTINUATION OF PAUL IN JERUSALEM

What happened after Paul was pulled out of the temple?
Paul was taken as a prisoner, bound in chains. The chief captain ask Paul who he was? When he heard Paul speaking in Greek, he accused him of being the Egyptian who led four thousand men out into the wilderness, which were murderers.

Paul requested permission to present his story before the people. He tried to prove to the Jewish people who were accusing him, that he was a Jew. He began by telling them that he was born in Tarsus a city in Cilicia. He even spoke to the people in Hebrew(the language of the Jews). He further tell them that he was schooled under Doctor Gamaliel. He told them that he always observed the law and in his ignorance he persecuted the Christians until he met Jesus on the Road to Damascus. He was not afraid to speak about Jesus as the Saviour. The people were so angry at him. They commanded that Paul be put to death.

The chief captain commanded his soldiers to bind Paul for beating. It was nomal for Romans to beat a confession out of the accused person. As Paul was being bound, he asked the centurion if he knew that it was against the Roman law to bind and flog a Roman citizen without a trial. The centurion became afraid and told that chief captain that Paul was a Roman citzen. Paul was loose and brought before the Sanhderin Council to find out the exact charges that were being brought against Paul.

PAUL IN JERUSALEM ACTS 21

PAUL IN JERUSALEM

Who was Philip the Evangelist?

He was one of the seven helpers in the early Christian Church.
He had become an evangelist (someone who preach and draw men and women to Christ.)
He lived in Caesarea.

Who was Agabus?

He was a prophet who came from Judea to Caesarea.
He took Paul’s belt from him and ties his hands and feet and prophesied that Paul would suffer and be bound hand and feet in Jerusalem.

Who was Mnason?

He was an old Christians disciple from Cyprus.
Paul and his friends stayed with him on their way to Jerusalem.

Why did Paul took a vow of purification?

Paul took a vow of purification on the advice of James to convince the Jews that he still practiced the Jewish law according to Moses. He also did it to avoid problems with the Jews. Paul had to have the vow of purification done because he was sharing with the Jews as done in other chapters how God had accepted the Gentiles even though they were not circumcised. He let them know that it was not necessary for conversion. Some Jews thought that he was teaching other Jews against the law of circumcision, hence, he had to go through the process of purification.

What happen before the seven days of purification was up for Paul?

Jews from Asia when they saw Paul in the temple told other Jews to catch Paul, because he taught against Jewish law and defiled the temple by bringing Gentiles into it. The whole city was in an uproar, and people came running and grab Paul out of the temple. They wanted to kill Paul, but he was rescued by Roman soldiers
